CARNEY: NEW CHAIRMAN OF LT. GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION

Posted: July 12, 2004

Lt. Gov. John C. Carney Jr. became chairman of the National Lieutenant Governors Association at the organization’s annual meeting last week. Carney, a first-term Democrat who served for the past year as chair-elect, will lead the group for the next year.

“As an active, non-partisan organization, the NLGA has created a forum for lieutenant governors to talk about issues and exchange best practices,” Carney said. “It provides all of us a great opportunity to find effective ways to address new problems, foster cooperation between states and generally improve the effectiveness of our offices.”

The organization was formed in 1962 as the professional association for the elected officials who are next in line of succession to the governors of the 50 states and five territorial jurisdictions of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Carney succeeds Lt. Gov. Karl Ohs of Montana, a Republican whose one-year term ended Saturday.
